I've only lived near Footscray for a few weeks but even before I was quasi-local, I'd been told about this place. "You have to go there". "Best place in the hood". "Large servings, well priced, extremely tasty". Well... its reputation did precede it but all the commentary was spot on. Go hear ONLY if you're HUNGRY! Serves are significant to say the least. The food is comfort food. Homely, tasty, easy! Genuine Cantonese cuisine!
Went here Christmas Eve for my family's annual Chinese banquet tradition and chose Poon's after all hearing such rave reviews.
Now I will admit, we all have high standards with Asian cuisine, having most of us tried some of the best places in Australia and my parents even in Bangkok so to others I can see how Poon's would be a lovely little Chinese place however we were somewhat disappointed.
The food - bland, tasteless, greasy and just nothing to rave home about.
The service - uninterested and inattentive. We had two staff serving our table and for some reason everything we asked the staff to get for us they would simply nod, walk away and we wouldn't see them again and nor would we get what we requested. In the end we had to grab another staff and explain the situation and they basically had to take over our table!
Won't be going back. Much better places in the west.
