If you walk too fast, you might miss this quiet, unassuming place. Walk in (make sure you are early) and you often see a delicious array of sweet treats, freshly baked croissants and bread but no one in sight. Don't be alarmed by the lack of people as those in the know get in quick and things sell out quickly. The classic croissant is one of the best I have had in Sydney. Light, flakey, buttery with distinct layers when you bite into it. Similarly, the almond croissant is amazing byt sweeter. From the sweet treats, my favourite is the date creme brulee tart which last time ran out at 10am! Also love the lemon meringue which is one mouthful bursting with delight. It is hard to take home as the beautiful meringue peaks will be stuck to the paper bag. The frangipane tarts are classic, buttery & delicious and the chocolate ganache tart quite rich. If you're over muffins being too dry and too big, give Ragamuffin a whirl. Their unique cooking method keeps them nice and moist, and they often have a special surprise inside. Try Pavlova - it's got strawberry custard, kiwi fruit, marshmallow meringue and a passionfruit glaze.
This place is a lovely little ( and I mean little!) oasis on the slightly-grim-these-days Norton Street. The decor is unique, with old cheesy album covers adornibng the tables - Bazza Manilow, Billy Joe, Bette Midler and Barbara Streisand (with Barry Gibb). Must ask them about the B sub-theme next time...
Their muffins are unique too - they're steamed and then baked, keeping them lovely and moise and a bit fluffier than some. There's usually a surprise centre, too - be it a custard or cream in an interesting flavour. Speaking of flavours, last time I went, there must have been 20 varieties, sweet and savoury. Impressive!
