Retreat Hotel
Located in trendy Brunswick, the Retreat Hotel provides just that – a retreat from the stresses of city living. This traditional corner pub offers patrons a range of local beers on tap, spirits and wines. With an expansive beer garden that has a gorgeous large tree in the centre, why not opt to drink outdoors? Meanwhile, the bistro serves traditional pub fare for lunch and dinner, with the added bonus for parents that children are welcome. The Retreat Hotel is also renowned for its live music acts, which take to the stage near the bistro several nights a week.
Unlike many watering holes, this Brunswick favourite understands that “beer garden” does not mean “outdoor patch of concrete just big enough to shove a rickety old table into”. Here, in the middle of Sydney Rd’s super-urban bustle, lies a tranquil backyard replete with long wooden tables, heated nooks and a picnic lawn ripe for sprawling. Honestly, there is nothing much that you can say is wrong with this pub, unless of course you happen to be one of those people that like to sit at pokie machines and feed money into it, then unfortunately this isn’t going to be a pub for you. Well, I’m not one of those people so I guess that doesn’t really apply. In fact, this pub is nothing short of awesome, with a huge beer garden, lively atmosphere, great beer on tap, and of course live music. In fact this is one of the best places for live music that I have been to, especially the style that tends to be played here. Honestly, I could spend ages at this pub, and it is only time restrictions that prevent me from doing so.
It's either hit or a total miss with every trip to The Retreat. Be warned the vegie curry is not actually vegetarian (contains fish sauce). Regardless, the Coopers on tap keeps me returning. This pub is surprisingly quiet during the day and good for a cheerful lunch or casual pint, but becomes frenetically rowdy on weekend evenings.
