Riverland
On a balmy summer’s night, it is hard to go past Riverland for drinks in Melbourne. Tucked under Princess Bridge and Federation Square, it is an open indoor-outdoor venue on the banks of the Yarra with a relaxed, social atmosphere. Open for breakfast through til late, drinks, bar snacks and a BBQ menu are all available, to enjoy as you watch the city lights twinkle and the world go by.

Well, while it isn’t my favourite bar, namely because everybody else seems to want to come here and have a drink, and if you get caught in a rain storm you can be in for a fairly wet time (though they do have some undercover areas which helps), but it is still a bar that I like. Basically, it is a bar set up on the banks of the Yarra at what I believe were some old storage sheds. The bar is mostly an outdoor affair, though they do have some areas which are undercover, as well as a couple of rooms in the bank. You get here by either descending the elevator from Fed Square, or simply walk down the stairs. Anyway, I don’t mind this place, but the the lack of decent beers, and the crowds, tend to put me off a bit.
This is a fantastic place to visit and great outdoor setting for good weather and during cooler weather there's also under cover area with outdoor heaters. There's ample space for various group sizes. The wine least is decent and we had a really good New Zealand pinot. The staff are really attentive and courteous. Charming view of the Yarra River and it gets quite busy on Friday nights and weekends as you'd expect.
Riverland was irritating me so much.. I kept hearing about it from various friends, but as I don't work in the CBD I had never exprienced it's charm. I finally had the opportunity to dine there on Tuesday. The sun was shining and we were on the deck, enough room for my pram and a lovely eggplant pizza later and I was satisfied. (The kids had the chips with the spicy tomato sauce, but the adults couldn't restrain themselves from those either.) I sometimes get tired of seeing so much eggplant on menus, being a vegetarian, you sometimes feel it's all you are eating! But despite this, I found my pizza delicious. There was a "penne with mushroon and truffle sauce" on the menu but I'm a truffle virgin and wasn't bold enough to order it. Will have to give it a try next time. Lovely spot to relax with friends and family.
