Rose Diner and Bar
A hint of nostalgia served up in a relaxed and sophisticated setting.Taking over the iconic Rose Hotel at 309 Bay Street, Port Melbourne, friends Steed Sherriff (former
Manager of the Royal Saxon, Richmond) and Ashley Cranston (former Hospitality Manager, Little
Creatures Dining Hall, Fitzroy) have turned business partners to create an inspired new venue that
offers a dining room, caf and back bar for music and drinking.
Rose Diner and Bar brings a little nostalgia to the dining room with a menu
inspired by the Country Womens Association and Chef Stephen Drakes English heritage. Dishes such as Welsh Rarebit Croquettes ($9), Steak
Diane ($25) and Prawn Cocktail ($14) stay true to their origins but take a contemporary turn, in situ
with Melbournes dining scene. Mums Trifle ($12) and Peach Melba ($14) round off the retro menu.
Locally sourced seasonal produce is an imperative throughout the business. Milawa Chicken,
Gippsland beef and Spear Creek salt-bush lamb from South Australia make up part of the carnivorous
offerings, while leaves, herbs and heirlooms are sourced from Gourmet Greenhouse in the Yarra
Valley given and given starring roles in side salads. Weekly offerings will include traditional-style
Sunday lunches ($24 per person) with seasonally changing dishes, and roasted chook dinners for two
on Tuesday nights ($32 per duo).
Upstairs youll find Back Bar, providing a much-needed space in
Port Melbourne for casual late-night drinking, canaps and live music, with a focus on jazz and swing.
To the front is a private dining room and functions space offering set menus and canap packages.
Little Rose Caf is out the back with access via Heath Street and will
be a casual early morning and afternoon stop. Caffeine chasers will find Syndicate beans, Jonesy's
milk and Bon Soy (both $3.50) while jaffle enthusiasts can munch on Fried Green Tomatoes, Basil and
Goats Curd or Duck with Apple Jelly ($8), egg lovers can savour Baked Green Eggs while there will be shakes and even a bellini offered on the ...read more

We were here earlier this afternoon for a lazy Saturday lunch with the family. The service was so friendly. We had a nice seat near the back on the soft benches. Ordered the steak sandwich, rose burger special both came with beer battered chips cooked to perfection. The burgers were just delicious. Additionally, we ordered the toast with cheese for the little one. Nice atmosphere, really relaxed. The waiter/waitress were so friendly and accommodating. I would definitely return again and try out their other dishes on the menu. Parking was easy to find on the street, in fact directly in front of the restaurant.
Love, love, love the food here - its delicious although a little on the pricey side. The place is beautiful, I love the interior decoration and have come here quite a few times just to sit, relax and have a drink - I highly recommend the ginger beer spiders!
Inevitably something delicious will tempt me - I have a soft spot for the tuna vol au vents. In all, highly recommended.
This place looks like it's been recently renovated and the fresh modern look really provides a family-friendly dining experience. The menu is a pub menu and it may take you a while to decide on what to eat as there are so many different dishes to choose from and I wanted to try so many of them. We ended up going with the food platters to share as there were a few of us here. We got 3 different share plates of chicken wings, beef, salmon and the sides of chips, salad and cauliflower cheese. The chicken wings were a bit small but went so well with the blue cheese sauce and the beef was so soft and cooked just right. I would like to back to try the main dishes as well as the sandwiches which I saw a few other people in the restaurant order.
