This is probably the biggest cathedral out of Melbourne and even though the construction started 1896, the work wasn't completed in til quite recently, in 1977. It seems that they didn't have the funds to complete it and that's why it took more than 80 years to complete. And if you count that the bells were only delivered in 2001, then just imagine how recent was the final works.
The cathedral is very nice outside. It is a Gothic architecture with all the details expected from the style. Inside, the walls and pillars look new, compared with other cathedrals. And the roof is very nice, made out of dark wood. Most likely the lack of funds made that the roof is wood instead of stone. I really wasn't expecting to see such a nice cathedral in the inside and it was very interesting reading about the history of the long construction.
I would recommend visiting it if you pass by.
