This is another of those pubs that I have only been to a couple of times despite the fact that I used to live in Adelaide. Fortunately I have friends who always want to go to a different pub for some special occasion, and this occasion was a friend of mine heading off to Melbourne. I decided to come back here on my recent trip to Adelaide, if only to check it out again. It is a pretty flash little pub, and I have to say it wasn't bad. The beer garden is non-smoking, though the problem was that despite it being a hot day they had the wood fire going, so even though there wasn't any cigarette smoke, the wood smoke ruined the experience a bit. Still it is a nice pub, and I would come back here again, though there are better places that I would rather go to.
Came here for catch up with girlfriends as we all hadn't been here yet and I heard they do real good wood oven pizzas. The place itself was nice, good ambience and they also had an outdoor beer garden with heaters and umbrella's. The service wasn't that great, I don't know if it was because there was only two staff and the one working the floor was hard to get the attention of so whenever we wanted something we would have to go up to the counter and ask or yell out to the waiter when he was nearby serving another table. As for the food - we ordered two pizzas and yes the base was nice, but there was hardly any topping. My other friend disliked her Chicken schnitzel - it was served warm not hot and the gravy had already started to soak in by the time it got served to her and it was salty. The Saracens Burger the other ordered was big and juicy and we loved the fries.
The Saracen's Head is one of the Adelaide pub circuit's best kept secrets. The highlights of their dining menu are their exceptionally consistent and delicate wood-oven pizzas, which make the most of some fantastic gourmet topping combinations. Cooked in plain sight in the pub's courtyard, the pub also sports one of Adelaide's more successful interior make-overs. The open-lan dining area is chich but not overstated, and exposed original walls in the front bar make a nice highlight of the building's heritage. Now featuring great chilled beats as the weekends roll in, we keep finding new reasons to go back for more!
