I've stayed at the Cairns Shangri-La Hotel on two occasions. One when travelling for business, and the other a personal holiday. The hotel would be one of the best options in central Cairns, but is a little tired. The room for my most recent visit was much nicer than the first - overlooking the pool area. For travellers going to Cairns my advise would be hire a car and go further up the coast to Port Douglas. Much nicer options there (unless you have a need to stay in the Cairns city area).
