Gleaming translucent fishes are elegantly draped across hand-formed ovals of vinegared rice, then dressed with toppings so small they appear to be in miniature. I’m sitting at the sushi bar at Shiki, one of Sydney’s oldest Japanese restaurants, with more than three decades of experience under their obis. I’m dining with a friend who comes here often, so I’ve left him in control of ordering. He’s thrown out menus in favour of leaving our meal in the hands of Shiki’s skilled sushi chef, capping it with a seventy dollar per person spend. We’re greeted with hot towels, which you place on curved holders for use later in the meal, then our adventure begins with an Amuse Plate ($24) of Japanese appetisers. Along with a shot glass of Sunset Akanesasu ($9/60ml) – a junmai sake brewed from organic rice in the Nagano Prefecture, this trio of dishes paradoxically serves to both sate my gnawing hunger while at the same time making me hungry for more. I was apprehensive coming here for lunch after seeing the highish prices and because the restaurant is in a touristy location. But I am glad to have been happily surprised. Located one level above street level, this oasis transport you away from the busy Rocks area to a relaxed and nicely decorated place filled with smiles and warm hospitality. The menu is extensive offering all the familiar dishes and some specialty dishes such as wagyu beef cooked at the table on hot pink Himalayan salt blocks. This was fun and unusual and cooks surprisingly quickly. The result was dicious, tender, juicy slices of wagyu with just a touch of saltiness and not an overly rich texture. The more familiar sounding dishes are not standard at all and are all prepared with care, precision & beautiful ingredients that are absolutely delightful to eat. Sashimi platter had a good selection of fresh seafood, firm flesh that melt on your tongue. The hand rolls are generous filled with the perfect ...read more
What does Wagyu & Pink salt have in common? Shiki! Yes, Shiki serves wagyu that gets cooked on a plank of pink salt. Not only that they also serve wagyu 10+ for sabu sabu! The meat just melts in your mouth and makes you wanting more!!!!The location is at the ROCKS and its a bit far for me but to hear that they serve WAGYU im trekking to get this in my BELLY!Staff and management was awesome, their customer service and mannerism was amazing, it seem like I returned to japan. They also serve Japanese seafood imported as well but I didn't try them because im more of a meat kinda guy! Till next time ... keep eating!
My boyfriend took me here as a surprise for our anniversary and it was great. They had two degestation menus which were almost exactly the same so there wasn't that much choice. But the food was excellent! I recommend the grilled mackerel, the pork belly and the oyster. A bit on the pricey side, but if it's a special occasion then it's definitely worth it.
