Psycholgists using the best science to help you lose weight and manage lifestyle changes for optimal health.After many people close to us began to be affected by the negative health outcomes associated with carrying around too much weight, and growing increasingly disheartened at the predatory nature of the diet industry, we decided to form Smart Psychology in 2013.
Our mission is to help our clients lose weight and keep it off using the best research in psychology.
HOW CAN A PSYCHOLOGIST HELP ME?
The Australian National Health and Medical Research Council recommend that health professionals target weight reduction from three different angles:
- Increased physical activity.
- A structured diet.
- Behaviour modification and mindset coaching.
Unfortunately, the most common view among our friends and family, and even the media, is that to lose weight we have to increase our exercise and reduce the amount of calories we eat. While this is true, there is one other area that is rarely mentioned but is vital for long-term weight loss - this is our mindset.
Mindset is a combination of factors that influence what we eat, how much we eat and our physical activity. Not taking care of mindset is why many people's New Year's resolutions never last more than a few weeks or months, and why the diet industry makes so much money. Mindset includes things like:
a) The way we deal with stress
b) How we think about exercise and food
c) The bad habits that influence what and how much we eat
d) Our confidence and motivation to stick to our diet and exercise plan
