As one of the chief masseurs at the internationally renowned Elysia Golden Door Health Retreat, I have had the privilege to spend time with clients getting to know intimately what it is that creates chronic pain, tension and stress in the muscles and cells of their bodies.
I have heard stories which directly link lifestyle, diet and daily anxieties to back pain; muscle wear and tear; and the ageing process.
It has been a journey well beyond anything they teach in biology classes or at remedial massage school. To realise the degree to which our modern life directly impacts our bodies has been a real eye opener. How our shoulders crunch up due to battles with difficult children, ageing parents, an ailing economy, noisy neighbours, or the banks. How this leads to the production of cortisol and other stress hormones which age us and lead to disease in response to these daily stresses: how shoulder spasms can lead to pain in the lower back, pelvis and hips, and throw our entire spine out of alignment - or to be metaphorical - our very backbone! All of which can be alleviated by exercise; deep breathing; mindfulness and meditation; and of course the stimulation of a good massage.
