I thought this place had a lovely, authentic old-school charm. I have to point out that I've never been to Japan, though! The staff were lovely and the menu was extensive. I can recommend the mixed sashimi, beef tatayi, and the miso fish for the main was generous and delicious!
The prices were good too!
Although Suishaya Inn isn't much to look at, the staff and food are awesome :)
I have an anaphalatic allergy to MSG, and they were very accommodating and competent when it came to dealing with this (something that I haven't found at any other japanese restaurant in melbourne). Note - if you do have an allergy, ask for "Cindy" as she is very knowledgable about what is in the food/ingredients.
The food itself is absolutely delish!! I usually have the banquet (with some minor modifications suggested by Cindy to meet my allergy requirements). There is a dish (not sure of the name) with deep fried tofu and miso sauce that is seriously delicious.... an absolute must!! I travel 40 minutes to go to this restaurant and it hasn't disappointed yet.

Furthermore, it seemed to be the only Japanese restaurant in Ringwood unless you count the Eastland food court (which I do; however it was closed). Despite the late hour (9pm or so), Suishaya Inn was still open, with plenty of diners enjoying their meals. The decor was consistently clean and tidy, but a bit less Japanese-themed than one would expect. The menu offered a range of dishes; however the vegetarian section was decidedly minimalist. Nonetheless, we ordered, and the food arrived promptly. The dishes were enjoyable but not spectacular - mostly due to the poor range of meatless options. I would recommend the tempura vegetables, but the noodles are pretty standard stuff. For what you get, prices are not great, but I have no complaints about the staff - they were friendly and attentive. In sum, Suishaya Inn is a fairly ...read more
