Sure, this pub happens to be in Newcastle so it is probably not a convenient pub for people to visit when they, say, live in Melbourne. However, if you happen to be down that way then it is actually a pretty decent pub. It has some decent beers on tap, which is always something that I appreciate, but it also has quite a large beer garden, which is another thing that I love. In fact as a pub it is quite large, and has some nice rooms as well. Oh, and being next to the railway station also helps quite a lot.
We used to love bringing the kids here for dinner. We would order nachos or schnitty. The roasts were $10 and the kids meals were cheap. All of a sudden the menu has changed and gone all fancy. The prices have increased and theres nothing on the menu we wanted. But since we were already there we ordered the chicken roast. The waitress was quite unfriendly and the chicken was overcooked and tough. The pumpkin was undercooked and there was very little gravy. When i go out and spend money on food i expect it to be better than what i could russle up at home! We googled The Kent and thats where we will be going from now on. Looks like the SJH has gotton too big for its boots. Not impressed and will not be back unfortunatly.
As part of a group I first tried SJ's on a Sunday night and found good service and value for money. On subsequent weeknight visits the food quality was not quite as good. However, on the last Sunday night visit with a small group, there was quite a wait between ordering and receiving the meal, and we all found the food was below the quality enjoyed previously. One chilli lover ordered a dish with a Mexican topping - no description was included on the menu, nor any warning given upon ordering - but one bite was sufficient to burn her mouth - a feeling which remained for several hours - be warned! We will not be going back in a hurry.
