The Abyssinian Restaurant
Step off Racecourse Road and into the continent of Africa, with The Abyssinian Restaurant at Kensington. Serving Ethiopian-inspired cuisine, this family-run eatery offers something different to most other places – rather than each diner eating separately, food is served on large, communal trays. This makes it cosy and familiar.
The appetizers are sumptuous, especially the melanzany, which consists of grilled cubed eggplant with garlic, olive oil, chillies and bread rolls. All meals are good value for money, but especially the combination platter, which allows you to try a bit of everything.

For a truly Ethopian/Eritrian restaurant, try 'The Abyssinian'. The food is sensational, and the atmosphere is quite convivial. My favourite (and my husband's!) dish was the 'Dorho Zighini', a chicken casserole dish slow-cooked in 'Berbere sauce' and served with a whole boiled egg, wrapped in the traditional Injera bread. Yuuuum! ***Highly advise you to make a booking beforehand - this place gets packed out quite early!***
Feel like something different? Then this is the place! Traditional Ethiopian food in the heart of Flemington - just on Racecourse Rd. The Abyssinian is a restaurant focused on delivering both a high standard of food but also a high standard of service. For first-timers the menu can look a little daunting but stick with the share platter and you'll be fine. With a platter selection of either vegetarian or non-vegetarian cuisine, the share platters encompass and varied array of Ethiopian choices. Served on top of what resembles a large pancake, diners are encouraged to eat with their fingers. For messier eaters, like myself - fear not. as you can easily request cutlery. Serving sizes are quite large so you won't be hungry afterwards. Just advise your waitperson on how many people in your group and they will accommodate accordingly. The Abyssinian is great for a large group or family get-together!
I have been to The Abyssinian several times, and could not have been happier with my meal or the service. I highly recommend ordering the platter, as this gives you a great array of different foods to sample, and there is enough here to serve two people. Make sure you book well in advance, as this restaurant can get extremely busy.
A really lovely local restaurant. A wide choice of fantastic Ethiopan food (if you've never tried Ethiopian cuisine, you're missing out!). First time you go, try the $45 platter - a little bit of everything and more than enough for two people. Absolutely delicious. The atmosphere is really nice, and the service is friendly and efficient. Great Ethopian beers on offer, too. Highy recommended.
