The Artist
Born in Sydney in 1928, Charles Blackman left school at 13 to work as an illustrator for the Sydney Sun newspaper while attending art school. Moving to Melbourne in the mid 1940's his work met critical acclaim through the Schoolgirl and Alice in Wonderland series. His work is associated with dreamlike images tinged with mystery and foreboding. In 1960 he lived in London for six years after winning the Helena Rubenstein Scholarship. Blackman was a co-founder of the Melbourne Contemporary Art Society in 1953 and was one of seven Antipodeans responsible for the Antipodean Manifesto.
Blackman has won many prizes and his work is hung in all major Australian galleries and collections. Charles Blackman shares the record for Australia's highest paid living artist.

If I had all the money to spend I would definitely go to all the Artseries Hotel. Our experience at the Blackman was fantastic, with great customer service and the amazing decor the moment you walk into the hotel. Although it's in St. Kilda the tram goes straight to the city and other places so it's quite convenient despite some reviews.
My husband and I stayed at The Blackman for 3 nights and absolutely loved it. We stayed in a deluxe studio with a balcony. It felt like a home away from home... that is if your home was a studio apartment decorated in designer furniture. The room felt spacious and roomy, the bed was comfy and the hotel itself is stylishly decorated with Blackman's work. There are little mirrored bunnies in the hallways and lift lobbies which I found really cute.
