Yep, this is your typical Brunswick bar, or should I say beer hall because that is basically the feeling you get when you first step into the place. While it does at first simply look like a restaurant, if you step through one of the side doors you will not only find what is more traditionally a bar, but you will also discover that they have some upstairs rooms for chillaxing. Actually, those upstairs rooms are pretty cool, especially the comfort. Yeah, there is an outdoor area, but it is small, and generally reserved for the smokers, but don’t let that detract from the charm of the place.
It was a Friday night dinner with my work colleagues. We had arrived early so we parked ourselves at the bar. A fantastic collecti0n from domestic micro breweries, I opted for the lager on tap. Beer was more so on the lighter side of a lager but definitely went down well that night. When we were seated, we had decided to order the "standard banquet" which consisted of 8 dishes. The highlight of the banquet was the grilled squid and pad thai dishes. Everything else, seemed quite average. Probabaly due to having 3 Asian cuisines coming from the one kitchen. Brunswick Mess Hall seemed to be an old Scout's Hall or possibly church? Setting and ambience was very pleasant.
Came here for a colleague's farewell drinks recently and about 16-18 of us had our own cordoned off area at the front. Definitely made our event more intimate and comfortable. Food was mostly Asian inspired stuff like baos, soft-shelled crab and edamame. On the other hand their drink list was pretty extensive, although a bit pricey for the area. To be honest, the decor combined with the venue's low ambient lighting and general vibe was pretty appealing to me.
