The Mess Hall in Melbourne’s Bourke Street may sound a shambles, but in fact it is an unpretentious, chic little café come restaurant open from breakfast through until dinner. Fresh coffees, eggs, fruit salad, muesli and sourdough toast will appeal for breakfast. For lunch and dinner, a concise offering of Italian pastas, gourmet pizza, salads are offered. For dessert, tiramisu and pannacotta top the list.

Decided to give this place a try for breakfast. It has a nice interior & pleasant ambiance. Although the menu do not have an all day menu and not many selections to choose from, I found that the food was moderately priced. Staff was friendly, nice and was open to having small conversations with their customers. However, there wasn't anything impressive that would attract me to come back here again for a second visit.
Still one of my faves for breakfast in the city. The coffee here is really good and the avocado and toast is great value. There are different sections for seating available so it's good for intimate catchups and groups of up to 8 even. The service here is really friendly and the food doesn't take long to come out at all. This place is a classic and highly recommended.
This cafe is fine - food selection is good all day, tea and coffee are nice and they offer reasonable service. I did ask for a separate jug of hot water with my peppermint tea today - which never arrived - but apart from that, the place is fine. They won't take your order over the counter, but will send you back to your table to wait for a server. The front of the cafe as you step in makes it seem cramped, but it isn't. There's plenty of room towards the rear and also outside.
