Finally Melbourne has its own piece of Luke Mangan action. A local boy, Luke left town to build his empire internationally and become a major player in the celebrity chef stakes. We welcome him home at The Palace where he has set up a modern gastro pub with an entertaining open kitchen, serving fabulous modern Australian dishes plus a few traditional pub favourites with a twist. You’re never in danger of forgetting where you are as Luke Mangan branding is everywhere, from cookbooks to monogrammed aprons to a huge portrait out the front.

If the soft launch was anything to go by, Luke certainly has another winner on his hands. Last night 140 family, friends, foodies and fans were treated to an evening of dishes plucked from the pages of Lukes latest cook book At Home and in the Mood and none left disappointed. Looking relaxed an unruffled, remarkable considering the builders were still putting the final touches to the venue as guests were arriving, Luke worked the room with the charm and good humour for which he is famous.We began with the amuse bouche, tuna tartare, which certainly did as intended as our taste buds were yearning for more. Prawn salad with papaya Thai style came next light and full of delicate flavours but didnt quite hit the mark I daresay due to the limited prep time affored to the team in the kitchen I hear they were prepping out the back while the kitchen was still being installed that afternoon!
