The Provincial Hotel
The Grand Old Dame of Brunswick Street.A visit to The Provincial is a trip into the heart of Fitzroy. Long considered the Grand Old Dame of Brunswick Street, The Provincial Hotel has a unique decor and shabby chic style. Today The Provincial Hotel remains at the heart of the Fitzroy cultural and social scene.
The hotel remains committed to the local community by providing an 'old school' watering hole for residents and visitors alike. The bar is a warm friendly place where anyone and everyone are welcome.
Dining at The Provincial can take many forms, from a casual snack in the bar to something a little more sophisticated in the dining room, from a multi course wine dinner with a local winery and winemaker to a large celebration dinner for 100 guests.
The dining room menu changes regularly to highlight seasonal produce and the chef's commitment to freshness and variety. Working closely with local meat producers allows the kitchen to serve an array of cuts and butcher styles in a simple rustic manner suited to our customers and our history. Daily specials represent the very best of local and seasonal produce
Add to this the Parisienne styled Salon upstairs ideal for large parties, weddings and corporate conferences and you have a little something for ...read more

This is a somewhat quieter, and larger, hotel than some of the other bars on Brunswick Street. There is a decent sized beer garden out the back, and there is also a restaurant here as well. However there is nothing really to set it apart from the other pubs and bars along Brunswick street, and to be honest with you, there are actually quite a few of them. However, the thing that does stand out is that there are no pokies here, which is what I love because it tends to draw a different clientele (though I have yet to find a pub on Brunswick Street that has pokies, not that I go out of my way to look for them).
I went for dinner here the other night and even though the service was very slow the food was tasty. I ordered a burger which came out on a wooden board which was a bit crack and chipping away but apart from that it was lovely. The place does look a bit run down and could do with some improvements but i am more than happy to come here again.
I have had mixed experiences at the Provincial. I went to a function in its upstairs room a couple of years ago, and was very impressed. The food was good (not spectacular, but pretty decent given that it was a function), the service was excellent and the room had great ambiance - especially by candlelight. However, I was left underwhelmed when I visited the restaurant for a meal recently. Service was bad, and the food was poor. It's a shame, because this pub has a great location and a good feel, so it has the potential to be something special.
Last night I had the worst dining experience of my life!
We were celebrating my birthday and we met at the Provincial Hotel in Fitzroy. This eventful dinner started going pear shaped when water started gushing from the roof (seemingly from the upstairs bathroom which was right above where we were seating that was flooded) soaking us with not-so-clean water. We were ...read more
We attended a private function in the upstairs room at the Provincial and wow, it was gorgeous. With chandeliers, wooden floors, a neutral colour scheme and beautiful dressing rooms, this venue would work for any lavish social event including small weddings. The location is excellent for public transport users however Fitzroy is notorious for difficult parking.
