The Quarter
Known to be busy The Quarter Cafe tables are at a premium. The coffee is known to be good so that may well be the reason why this place is a buzz with patrons. This place is cross between a restaurant and café. The cuisine is fundamentally Mediterranean and easily nourishing with their generous servings. It is recommended that you check the specials board so you don’t miss out. Lunch time is a favourite with the city crowd and breakfast is a quieter affair.
I would have to say that this place is a little old fashioned in that it seems to be one of those old style cafes as opposed to the hip and trendy newer cafes. It was okay, but the breakfast offerings were actually rather plain and uninteresting. The pancakes where decent, as where hash browns (I came here a second time having forgotten that I had been here previously). The staff were pleasant, however in the end there wasn't all that much about this place that made it stand out.
The Quarter is a cosy but busy cafe that's set in Melbourne's famous but touristy DeGraves Street in the heart of Melbourne. The menu items are Mediterranean inspired and the serving sizes are decent. It's usually really busy from early morning to just after lunch and the customers are a range of workers and also usually tourists. I found the service to be fast and friendly. Well worth a visit to soak in the Melbourne cafe and laneway vibe if you are visiting from interstate.
De Graves Street is packed with people coming to check out Melbourne's laneways and caf culture so it came as no surprise that The Quarter was filled with both locals and tourists. Hearty, healthy fare with good coffee make this a breakfast and lunch staple with office workers from the area. Staff are fantastic, super-friendly and helpful and service is fairly prompt considering how busy they are.
The atmosphere is very welcoming and relaxing. Staff are polite and informative when you have any questions or express concerns about dietary needs. I had the spaghetti with sun-dried tomatoes and mushrooms and it was perfectly cooked and seasoned, smothered with a heavenly creamy sauce. The portions are more than generous so make sure you leave space for dessert. Prices are very reasonable, given the quality and amount of food.
