Cafes
The Rusty Rabbit
I truly loved everything about my visit to this place in funky Darlinghurst. In a city awash with cafes, this one is a stand out. Magnificent stone walls inside and outside reminds you of Sydney's past, and yet it's not pretentious despite the patrician stone walls. Each staff member we encountered was polite and not at all pretentious, they've got the formula right. Food was very hearty, well prices and had some great attention to detail...my corn fritters with salmon and a poached egg was a top notch. Hubby loved his baked egg/tomato/chickpea dish. Can't wait to return, and hopefully to buy one of the fun toys they sell too.
Hollandaise sauce, I think, is the single greatest thing a poached egg and smoked salmon can aspire to, yet the path to perfection is fraught with danger for the cook. Hollandaise isn't particularly difficult to make, like its steak-friendly cousin béarnaise, it's really just a hot egg and butter sauce. BUT it's all about getting that oozing sauce at the right thickness without making the yolk proteins curdle into solid curd coagulates!
You're absolutely right - I'm totally having a Foodgasm right now over Rusty Rabbit's Salmon Eggs Benedict! Can't help it - it's the warm and cosy setting and the cutest rusty wabbit bunny ears in my Skim Cappucino that's got me all cray cray!
I went here for an easy weekday lunch and it was thriving with customers. The lovely waiter directed me to a table, gave me a menu and took my coffee order. I like that they offer breakfast foods all day and lunch options too. I was so keen for pancakes but trying to stay healthy so I got the chicken breast with brown rice, spinach and broccoli topped with sweet potato. Very healthy and nicely cooked. Could have done with a little more seasoning. They do a good chai latte too. A high rating because the man serving had extremely good customer service.
