I should note that this place is pretty small, which is probably why it is called the Swinging Cat. However, it is still one of those awesome basement bars that I just love to, well, love – or visit. It’s located in the heart of Sydney, and can be a little tricky to find, however it is certainly one of those places that does have quite a lot of charm about it at well. Oh, and the staff are pretty cool, though as I mentioned, it is a little small, so you may find it difficult getting a seat at times.

When you visit this New Orleans-inspired bar, squirreled away underneath Subway on the corner of King and Clarence, you'll come for the cool vibe, but you'll stay for the Sazeracs. Sink into the plush armchairs, gaze over at the open German piano and enjoy what The Swinging Cat does best – classic cocktails. I recommend starting with either the Peppermint Sazerac ($19); a bitey combo of cognac and bourbon, sugar, absinthe and bitters with a fresh finish of mint, or my favourite, the Ramos Gin Fizz ($18) - a perfectly fluffed, silky blend of gin, cream and egg whites. While you work your way through the cocktail menu (it would be rude not to), try out the excellence that is the wagyu beef and grilled cheese toastie ($14), or share the charcuterie board ($33) (worth getting, even if just for the truffled salami).

We just had a meal nearby and noticed the bar name and logo projected on the footpath and decided to go in for a night cap. As you go to walk in you are confronted by the neighbouring subway stores sign and the generic smell that the chain exudes. Don't worry, it soon disappears as you walk down the stairs into this dimly lit basement bar. The bar designed is New Orleans inspired. There is a band set up in the corner, you can enjoy some music with your drink. I am whiskey fan, cocktails, so I ordered the smoked honey. I am informed it is similar to an old fashioned, which is one my go to cocktails. The cocktail as the name suggests has a sweet honey flavour mixed with Johnny Black and talisker, you then get a smokey thyme hit. A nice cocktail, maybe a little too much smoke for me. A cool little venue for a cocktail and some music.
