It's cosy, it's small, it's intimate.
We were here for the Bent Burlesque and my birthday. Which was brilliant!!!
So I've been to quite a few shows here and will continue to go to them so long as I can book in with dinner included as the standing/sitting room is quite unsatisfactory and last time I didn't book a table I was stuck right at the back.
Being vertically challenged meant that I spent most of the time kneeling on a stool. Which:
a) hurt my knees &
b) was challenging after a few drinks
So if you want to actually *see* a show, I would highly suggest booking dinner + show tickets.
The staff, however, are the bomb. Except one of the girls that served us. She didn't smile all night.
Great performance space and bar in Newtown. Gets a variety of acts and is well suited to more intimate shows despite being able also to fit a decently sized crowd when the upper area is opened too. Good bar staff and selection of drinks. Walking into here for a gig is a bit of a nice surprise having just come off the bustle of King St and all the life of Newtown.
Imagine this:
It's a slightly chilly winters evening and you have your date beside you (whatever gender you may be). You're all smiles and "omg stop!", "no, YOU stop!". It's all really cute until your date says, "so... where are we going? I'm SOO hungry right now."
and your heart sinks because you really didn't decide on a place. You REALLY want to impress them but you look at their outfit - they're dressed to the nines - and you look ahead and see nought but Thai food and Indian restaurants filled with screaming children and neglectful yuppy parents. "uh oh." you think to ...read more
If you see any show in your short short lives, see the Jaded Vanities show at the Vanguard. It is absolutely beautiful. In fact the whole Vanguard-package is memorable: the food was great (we had dinner and show tickets - I recommend doing this), the staff were friendly, the decor is cosy and chic and the show... just see it.
