The Water Rat Hotel

So very disappointing. So inconstant. One night has good food with good service, then another has average food with absolute rubbish service. If only whoever owns this place had a bit of passion. The feeling I get is that the place is left to run itself and I am sure the staff are not paid enough to care all that much. You are gambling if you go here... it will either be really good or more often than not, it will be below average and the service will be so bad that you feel compelled to write a review just like this!

Great food and service at the Water Rat Hotel! Its always a delight to go there, the staff a friendly and the food is great! Fantastic wine list with reasonable prices. Ive been to many functions there. My friends engagement was a highlight and she coudlent have been more happy! The night went perfectly, in fact many people from the functions i have been to there have then had there own parties there as a result! Probably a bit classier then most pubs, ie. probably dont want people to walk in to see peoples feet resting on the tables. Recommend it for sure!

For the second time I have been disappointed with the standard of staff (lack of manners etc) at the Water Rat. Just recently my friends and I had to leave as it seems they DO NOT CATER FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES. Having recently sustained a leg injury (leg in splint and on crutches) I had to leave as they would not allow me to rest my leg against a table or on a chair. When my friend/s tried to speak to someone we thought may have been management to work out a compromise we weren't given much more than a blank stare. In this day and age I'd have expected MUCH BETTER. Some 12 people had to be relocated as they (Water Rat staff) were not prepared to put themselves out. I was left feeling humiliated to say nothing of the disappointment of having to move (along with the discomfort of having to walk to another hotel on crutches in the cold). The atmosphere is a delight, pity about the blaise hospitality of the staff who couldnt of cared less. My friend had a broken knee, but was offered no alternative when told to "get her foot off the table" - Couldnt of cared less that a few more friends were joining the group and new customers were going to be introduced to the Waterrat for the first time. Needless to say, we didnt stay. I found the staff very rude and unhelpful.

Don't let the name put you off. An up market bar with great selection of beer and wine. In winter, relax downstairs on the leather sofas or in summer try the upstairs beer garden.
