Well worth the 20-minute drive from the CBD, this museum is popular with families in the Brisbane area. Most exhibitions are interactive and include diesel locomotives, an impressive model railway and the fantastic kid-sized nippers area, where children can run a railway system themselves. Okay, it is a bit of a hike to get to but if you like trains then it is certainly well worth the effort. Unfortunately you do need to catch a bus from the Ipswich Railway Station to get here, though the journey takes only about ten to fifteen minutes (however it does take an hour by train from the city). This place used to the the Queensland Rail Workshops, and in a way they still are, except that the only things that are worked on here are old steam trains. It is not so much that they build them, rather they refurbish them for use during events. In fact the entire Queensland Rail steam fleet is located here, if they aren't elsewhere. The museum is the first building and is a marvellous place for kids, however if you like the technical stuff, they do run tours of the workshops in the morning (so make sure you arrive early).
