Websters Bar
Home to one of the best whisky bars in Sydney!A journey from the past to the present, Websters Bar (formerly Zanzibar Newtown) is situated at the iconic site of the New Town Store. First established by John & Eliza Webster, it was from here the suburb of Newtown took it's name. Paying homage to the unique history of the site, Websters boasts an industrial style street bar, 1920s prohibition style whisky bar and 1950s Australian backyard rooftop bar.

This awesome bar literally defines the Newtown bar scene. To say it is magnificent is an absolute understatement. Sure, it has a great selection of beers, but that is almost expected when it comes to a Newtown bar, but that is still something that I love. However, the thing that really stands out is the rooftop deck that offers a magnificent view of the surrounding suburbs. Honestly, I could literally spend ages up there.
For a lazy sunday afternoon meet up with some friends the second level was a bit quieter and fit the need.
They also have $8 cocktails that are available, which weren't anything huge to write home about but they were $8. You can't complain really :)
I forgot to mention that my shoe ripped off my foot when I was leaving the 2nd floor. I believe there was some super-human-sticky-stuff on the carpet. Good thing I was wearing slip on flat shoes, face planting disaster averted.
While the 1950s backyard Australia-styled rooftop is the star of the show, this venue is essentially three bars in one. I started my afternoon in the sun with what has become my new favourite drink – the Passionfruit Lynchburg ($18) – Jack Daniels, Tuaca, lemon juice, passionfruit pulp and lemonade. Next up, I tried the vibrant Gimlet Grenade ($18) – Bulldog Gin, pomegranate syrup, plum jam and bitters - it tastes like summer and sherbet in a tall glass. Once the sun goes down and you find yourself craving something a little stronger, head down to level two and grab yourself a whiskey at the 1920's themed Lounge Bar.
Long time vistor to this bar before it changed hands. Only a few times under new management but tonight was my last ever visit. As single and sober female ( the designated driver) i was escorted out of the pub from the rooftop bar by three menacing and creepy african bouncers. They didnt even let me contact my friends who had all just ordered fresh cocktails and had to leave them behind. I was honestly scared. Will never return.
A truly awful experience. They've taken the lockout laws and made going out in Sydney even more painful. Incredibly rude security staff/management. Took a good 15 minutes to be allowed to leave... this bar has not only tainted its own image, but I will not be rushing back to Sydney any time soon either. What an absolute nightmare.
