all yum cha, all the time. That's not Yummie's motto, but it could be, and should be. serving yum cha from 10am to 10pm everyday, yummie has it's niche, and it does it well. It is typical yum cha fare, offering your standard "come around on carts" or the ability to order anything off the menu or the walls, adorned with large pictures of every offering. If you haven't already guessed, the decor is, well, lets say its appropriate. This is a place to stop in & get your yum cha fix. I couldnt see many first dates happening here. But the food is good, the yum cha selection is adequate without being vast, the service is speedy & courteous. Yes Yummie, you lived up to your name & I will be back!
Those popping in for a snack during the afternoon will be impressed with the abundant seating available. In fact, the place was deserted. Despite this, it had the appearance of a restaurant accustomed to cooking for large crowds; spacious and clean, with a kitchen to match. A huge TV glowed from above as staff members scurried to serve me. No sooner had the request for a turnip cake left my lips than there it was on my plate, scalding hot and oozing oil. Their egg custard tart was a confusing combination of insipid custard and masterful pastry. Still, their menu is immense, and as a yum-cha restaurant, prices and serving sizes are sensible. I recommend Yummie to those seeking variety and immediate service, rather than cosiness and gourmet cooking. Oh, and see if you can order something with pastry... they've certainly got that right.
Sharing space with a very handy grocers, Yummie Hong Kong Dim sum was a nice change from the usual Vietnamese found on Barkly/Hopkins street. Firstly we were offered all pre-made fried fare and only chose fried prawn rice paper roll (oily), so then chose (to choose) from the menu. Stick to the fresh made steamed dumplings and you won't go wrong. Translucent chive and prawn dumpling, Steamed wonton and steamed pork bun, all did not disappointed, Chewy salty calamari tentacles where a great contrast too, unfortunately the prawn stuffed eggplant was swimming in oil and the eggplant undercooked. Simple clean surroundings and friendly attentive staff. I will definitely be back.
