Yum the Japanese here is great! I have been to the Zushi in surry hills a couple of times before which is fantastic and last weekend I tried out this one. It is a bit more low key and casual then Surry Hills which is exactly what we were after. The food is so fresh, tasty and well presented - especially the plates of zushi signature rolls. We had the spider rolls which were amazing. I am a huge salmon fan so I can never go past the teriyaki salmon with a small serve of brown rice on the side - so good! The waiters and waitresses were all so lovely, helpful and attentive too! great service!
Zushi on Victoria Street is a great little find and perfect for a bit of people watching while you eat. While there are many sushi places around the area, they can be a bit hit and miss. You cant book a table, but in all the times we have been we have only waited once. A simple, long and skinny layout has two and four person tables on each side of a thin walkway. One of the side walls is entirely mirrored to make the place feel larger than it is. Start with a miso soup and a seaweed salad, while you think about what to order next. I then recommend that you share a Sashimi salad, a salmon inside out roll and the beef dish. The restaurant is BYO to keep your costs down and when you bring your own wine you will be looking at about $30-$40 a head for some great food. Perfect for a relaxed date or to catch up with a small group of friends.
This is a really great little Japanese restaurant, and it's cheapish and BYO to boot. The spider roll (soft-shell crab), as I think somebody below has mentioned, was a highlight when I was here, and we got a few sushi and sashimi platters to share which were all really fresh and tasty. The pan-fried gyoza, tiger roll and the agedashi tofu we had were my favourites, but it's the kind of fresh, tasty food you could eat all night, slowly working your way through the menu till you've tried everything. The only let down was the service, which was a bit brusque from the start, and continued till they effectively kicked us out not long after 10pm - on a Saturday night. I'm hoping it was just a bad night and not indicative of the service in general, as we all really liked everything else about the place, and would be keen to go back for sure, if the staff can manage a smile and an accommodating attitude. Great spot for a bit of Victoria street people-watching too.
