Historic, comfortable and unique - just four kilometres from central Castlemaine. The Heritage listed Chewton Post Office Residence (1879) offers great value historic accommodation in the Goldfields. A peaceful haven for those who appreciate history, cultural activity, ambiance and privacy. The small township of Chewton was once a bustling hub for the miners who found their way to the world's richest alluvial goldfields. The Chewton Post Office is a rare example of a working Post Office from this golden era, having operated continuously in this building since 1879. The building is a short walking distance to many historic gold rush sites, including the Australian Heritage Forest Creek diggings, the Expedition Pass Reservoir and the Garfield Wheel. The striking Post Office in the Main Road owes its continued survival to the determination of local residents, who lay claim to have saved their Post Office from closure three times in its 125 year history. In 1996 their determination was rewarded - and the Post Office and Town Hall buildings were handed over to community ownership. The distinctive red brick Post Office Building also now enjoys the protection of being listed on the Historic Buildings Register of Victoria. The Post Office continues to operate as a licensed Post Office by private operators, Andrea Ross and Sandy McKay, who are pleased to offer the former Postmaster's home as a unique getaway in conjunction with this vibrant little community Post Office. Ideally suited for couples who wish to self cater, it offers a bright well equipped kitchen, cosy sitting room, delightful double bedroom with spacious bathroom facilities (separate bath and shower) Continental breakfast supplies are provided. We offer this at a moderate tariff, in the hope that you will stay an extra day or two and really get to know the area.
