Conservation and Preservation Services
Preservation is really the care and appreciation you give to your books. It means having good housing, good housekeeping, regular maintenance and attention to opening and examining your books on a regular basis. Whether you have one short shelf of valued books, a cupboard full or a small library, you may wish to preserve them for the future; in each case the books are treasured and loved and need some tender care.
Conservation
Conservation seeks to use preventative measures to stabilise the condition of a volume or damage that may have occurred to preserve the book for future use without too much interference with the structure or major work on the cover.
Restoration
Restoration work seeks to restore a volume to good condition and as near as possible to its original state, by retaining as much as possible of the original structure and binding and using the same or sympathetic materials to make the repairs.
Full restoration includes:
Re-backing in morocco or calf, stained to match the original sides.
Repairing the corners and sometimes the board edges.
Repair of the paper.
Repair of the sewing.
Sewing head and tail bands.
Lettering and tooling the spine in an appropriate style.
Mending the inside joints or supplying new endpapers.
And when necessary the making of a storage box to fit the book
