Our heritage is Austrian and Polish. We both grew up and worked in hospitality with a little different story attached to each of us.
For the past 7 years we have had worked in cafes of Melbourne and have decided to open our own to introduce a bit of different approach to breakfast lunch and dinner. We love slow cooking and we base our ideas and use recipes that have been used in Austria and Poland for generations.
We specialise in dumplings; Austrian made of bread or potatoes served with roast pork or Polish Pierogi that are filled with cabbage and wild mushrooms, meat or Quark- Polish cottage cheese and caramelised onion. We use Swiss air dried-smoked bacon-Speck. We make homemade pasta Spaetzle a breakfast dish from an Austrian table and healthy salads using sauerkraut, beetroots or root vegetables. We do serve eggs and bacon but with a little difference to the usual Melbourne breakfast.. With Di Bella coffee at its best.
Food and drinks-together with our speciality beers from Poland Brok, Okocim and Zywiec to Austrian Erdinger, Trumer Pilsner, Goesser and Stiegl are not the only introduction to Austria and Poland. We have a mini delicatessen with home produce from pickled cucumbers, mustards, jams, teas or rye bread to range of sweets and lollies.
Chair14 however it is not only a food store, taking a size of the place into consideration and the fact that we are placed in the heart of alternative Thornbury. We have a large gallery space where we have regular shows and also on Thursday night we show European movies. We work very closely with locals on promoting creativity and providing art spaces for people who have good ideas and want to exchange them.
Everyone is welcome from photographers, painters to musicians where they can jam and play on Friday nights.
We do like relaxed atmosphere and we'd like our customers to feel the same when they enter Chair14.
