Leconfield is a working property of 4600 acres set in the beautiful hillside country on the Mulla Creek area of Northern New South Wales. This property has been in the Skerrett family for one hundred years in May 2014.
In 1983 Brian started the Jillaroo/Jackaroo school, the first of its kind in Australia. Since then, thousands of people from all over the world have come to the school. The school gives Australians and visitors from overseas a chance to learn how to become a Jillaroo/Jackaroo (Cowboy or Cowgirl) and also the experience of life on an Australian outback property.
The aim of the Jackaroo and Jillaroo course is to provide basic training for people with minimal or no experience, so that their employment prospects are increased. Leconfield is a working property, the skills and techniques used will be explained and demonstrated, then carried out by trainees under supervision.
At Leconfield we have a team of over thirty beautiful and user friendly Australian stock horses. The basic skills necessary for Australian stock riding and aspects of proper care are taught, and we match the horse to the rider.
We cater for people with no horse experience through to advanced riders, so you are sure to fit in, whatever your skill level.
During our course we want you to get basic knowledge of:
Bridling, saddling, riding and grooming of horses with a bit of natural horsemanship
Milking, mustering, yarding, tagging, marking and sorting of cattle
Mustering, catching, trowing and wigging (depending on length of wool) of sheep
Fencing, incl. debarking, building a cattle grid, building yards, making fences and fixing fences.
Pasture improvement and weed chipping
Whip cracking and lassoing lesson
After work there's a nice fire and time to socialize with the other students and improve your whip cracking and lassoing skills. On the last Thursday night we end the course with a lot of fun during a theme party.
