Situated on the foreshore of Thursday Island, The Grand Hotel enjoys magnificent views of the Endeavour Strait, Horn Island, Prince of Wales Island and the Cape York Peninsula in the distance. Fondly known as TI, Thursday Island is approximately 3.5 square km in size, much of which is covered in undulating hills.
Far from the typical tourist island, Thursday Island boasts a rich history of trading, marine industries and indigenous culture. The main local industries nowadays include fishing, crayfish, bech-demer and pearl farming. Thursday Island is the administration centre for the Torres Strait, which consists of 23 islands.
Unfortunately, the original Grand Hotel c.1890 was destroyed by fire in 1990 along with a great deal of rich history. Somerset Maughan is believed to have written a few short stories from the old veranda whilst enjoying a gin sling, and taking in the spectacular views of the Torres Strait. With the view just as captivating today, the hotel offers a premium location for your next stay on Thursday Island.
