The Bay of Bengal was the concrete result of many dreams. Del Lacota, owner/manager, had for many years nursed a desire to have a restaurant where he could offer people an opportunity to enjoy delicious food in a pleasant atmosphere, assisted by knowledgeable and friendly staff, and at affordable prices.
When Del visited India in 1986 with his Calcutta born wife, he was charmed by both the people and the culinary specialities he enjoyed in each region he visited. On their return to Australia, Del set about learning what was needed to successfully cook Indian food.
When in 1990, a small restaurant site became available in picturesque Glenelg, Del saw this as a window of opportunity to combine his visions. And so was born the Bay of Bengal (Bay, from the geographical location, and Bengal, from his wife's birthplace).
From such an unassuming beginning, the Bay of Bengal has created a well deserved reputation for excellent Indian food in delightful surrounds. The reasonable costs and committed staff have resulted in a loyal following of patrons, both from within the local area, as well as further a field. Today, tourists enjoying Glenelg's historic attractions mingle with South Australians in the experience of the Bay of Bengal, one of the State's award winning restaurants.
