Athena Cheer Academy is a newly established club located in Lawnton on the north side of Brisbane. Principal of the club, Kerry Merrett, brings a wealth of experience to the role having managed Western Districts Gymnastics for the past ten years and taking it from a tiny unrecognised club to one that sits amongst the strongest in the state. Athena Cheer Academy (ACA) is housed in a modern, spacious venue with a brand new competition floor, parent waiting area and ample parking.
The Athena team vision encapsulates our motto of ?Spirit, Strength and Unity?. This new club is built around the desire to bring coaches and parents together to support our students in an environment that is warm and welcoming to all. A team of outstanding coaches have been hand selected with the ability to provide quality coaching and whose mission it is to create a club where children will be valued and appreciated no matter what their talent or skill level. All coaches are cheer qualified and hold current senior first aid certificates and blue cards.
Athena Cheer Academy is a member of the Australian All Star Cheerleading Federation (AASCF). This style of cheer does not involve pom poms and chants for football games but rather places the emphasis firmly on the athleticism of the participants and the competition side of things?think perhaps ?Bring it On?, the movie. Despite the glitz and glamour, cheerleading is a serious and challenging sport. It lends itself particularly well to children with previous experience in artistic gymnastics, acro, dance etc. but the plus is that being a team sport, there are different parts to play for each child and we can work to the strengths of different individuals to easily develop participants of any age from entry level.
