As a parent you may feel your child is capable of so much more, yet doesn�t seem to be able to grasp reading and writing to meet your expectation. It is important to acknowledge that dyslexia has nothing to do with intelligence, as it can effect anyone, from gifted to below average intelligence. Intervention is vital and 2% of any class will require one-on-one to help catch up. By the time Naplan comes around in Year 3, many dyslexics may be three or four years behind in reading age.
Rather than focusing on the negative aspects of dyslexia, it is vital that we recognise the unique natural strengths and qualities this learning difference offers. A dear friend of mine, has a signed copy of one of Roald Dahl�s books with a spelling error � dsylexia!
Imagination and creativity can be lost along the way in our plight for �academic excellence.� We need to nurture the God-given talents and significant strengths of these little innovators � after all, they are the ones who lead us to new frontiers!
