Bikram Yoga is Hatha Yoga, it is a sequence of 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises practiced in a room heated to 38 degrees and 40% humidity. Bikram Yoga is an intense physically challenging series. Whether you are an experienced practitioner or here for your very first class, it is a 90 minute guided moving mediation targeting every muscle, tendon, ligament, joint, organ, gland and cell in your body, by way of contraction and extension, (stretching and compression).
Each posture is performed systematically to gain optimal health benefits and to physically prepare you for the next posture within the sequence. Unlike other forms of exercise, yoga gives you energy as it revitalises the mind and improves concentration.
The benefits from Bikram Yoga include:
- Flexibility, Weight loss
- Toning and strengthening muscles
- Reduces stress
- Reduces chronic back pain
The benefits go far beyond just those visible on the outside:
- Increases concentration & focus
- Creates self-discipline
- Creates piece of mind
- Detoxes the physical, mental and emotional aspects of Self
- Creates a mind, body, soul connection
The combination of stretching and compressing of muscles and organs while remaining still in postures (asana), temporally blocks circulation to the specific areas of your body. This is known as the tourniquet effect. On release, high speed oxygenated blood rushes through the compressed area, revitalising, rejuvenating the targeted area.
As the sequence remains unchanged, it enables you, the student, to fully observe what is going on in your body, mind and soul from day-to-day, not only within your practice on the mat but also outside of the hot room. Overtime, with consistent practice, your body will find its own natural balance and harmony, you will feel amazing, inside and out and have a new stillness of mind
