Farming
Get Shucked
The man at the table opposite us identified himself as somewhat of an oyster expert/devotee and declared these some of the best he'd ever had - before proceeding to order yet another dozen for his table. I think I trust him. Fresh oysters farmed just a few hundred metres away, at this lovely family run business. Let the staff recommend you a glass of delicious Tassie wine to go with them and settle in. Rumour has it the business is up for sale - let's hope nothing changes too much, it's pretty great as is.
Freshly shucked oysters from the oyster farm across the road. It doesn't get much better than that. Bruny Island oysters are large and creamy and you can by them by the dozen (or half dozen) from the little caravan store set up near the oyster farm. Benches and tables are provided, so you can sit there and enjoy your oysters, or get them to take away.
We did both, demolishing 3 dozen oysters between 4 of us in one sitting, then getting another 2 dozen to take away, and then another dozen to takeaway the next morning on our way back to Hobart.
Staff are friendly, but here, it's all about the oysters.
Situated along the main road of Bruny Island, this is one of the main stops for visitors. On a large plot, filled with random machinery and odds and ends, the get shucked caravan is where some of the best oysters you will ever have are. We ordered 2 dozen ($12 a dozen), lemon is 70c, and Tabasco and pepper are provided.
It's open air seating on very limited benches next to the carpark, the surroundings are not great, but the oysters are smooth, slightly salty, sweet, creamy and delicious morsels of goodness.
Needless to say I ate more than my air share, getting another dozen takeaway our next visit!
