After being closed to the public for over a century, Point Nepean National Park is rapidly becoming one of Victoria’s most popular visitor destinations – and it’s only a 90-minute drive from Melbourne. Boasting spectacular views across Port Phillip Bay and Bass Strait, it’s a place of natural and historical significance. The park is home to native trees and grassland housing wildlife including the bandicoot and black wallaby. Popular features include a memorial to where Prime Minister Harold Holt went missing, the Quarantine Station, Fort Pearce, and Fort Nepean. I was surprised how interesting and historical Portsea and Point Lonsdale are. If you love nature, the National Park and the beaches are a draw card.The old quarantine station is a majestic building and there are many other quirky things to see, such as the memorial to Harold Holt, who disappeared while swimming here. It's best to come on a warm day (summer) as the winds are strong and the weather unpredictable.
