It was a rather wet and dreary day when my friend and I ducked in here for a beer and to get out of the rain. From what I could see this is certainly one of those pubs that have been renovated to cater for a new, gentrified, resident of the old port district of Adelaide. I haven't been to this particular pub before, but I do know some of them in the area, and the last time I visited them they were quite ordinary. This pub, however, is cool, not just because of the friendly bar staff, but because of the cellar. Being the nosey person that I am I sneaked down then to discover four rooms in what felt like an old underground bunker. I suspect these are rented out for functions, or simply a place for people to escape to for some quiet. In fact, it is the cellar that will bring be back to this place again, even if it is only to sit down there and have a beer that place is cool.
Dined with a group recently. The food arrived in a timely manner however considering how quiet the restaurant was it was surprising how lacking the service was as it was adequately staffed - one waitress was lovely but we still felt like everyone wanted to clock off and go home. We had to ask for things more than once even when we were the last table as they were resetting for the next day. Meals were inconsistent and most the group were not happy with their meals. It's a real shame because we would like our local businesses to be places we can return to. The live music was over before we'd finished dinner and we were shuffled out the door before we were ready at 11pm. It was better the last time I went... But I'm not sure I will go again to see if it redeems itself.
Historic Port Adelaide Hotel that undergone a complete transformation over the past couple of years and would have to have the best decor of any hotel in the Port. The new management is working well to provide great food, drink and service. Last night we enjoyed a tasting platter, Salt & Pepper Calamari, Duck Shanks & Chicken Tenderloins with salad and chips which was all great. Good variety of beer on tap including my current favourite, Vale Ale. Talking to others last night, they recommend the T Bone steaks which are about 600 grams.
Oysters are a $1 each Mon to Thursday, what a bargain.
