Mexican cuisine is hot, tasty and thoroughly filling, making it the perfect autumn comfort food. And thankfully, we’ve found some of the best!
Honkytonks
Honkytonks is a large, modern venue that’s filled with comfy little nooks and crannies, perfect for settling in for the evening. Crazy artwork abounds, a multitude of margaritas flows freely from the bar, and the scent of delectable Mexican food drifts through the air. Make sure to give the ‘Pibl Pork’ tacos a try. That’s wonderful parcels of slow-cooked, achiote-marinated goodness. Mmmm. Find out more

The Elk & Pea
From the peacock wall mural to the cage-like sculpture and the wild ceiling paintings, The Elk & Pea is all about fostering a unique and stylish casual dining atmosphere. It serves up top-notch Central American food from breakfast to dinner and beyond, and we can’t recommend the ‘Mexican Fried Fish Sopes’ enough – fried barramundi, pickled cabbage, avocado, mango chutney and jalapeno. Delicioso. Find out more
“Lovely little Mexican-inspired restaurant in Braddon. The menu is thoroughly “Central American” with Mexican street-food options like tacos, burritos, a host of finger food, and various large sharing options like goat, pork and fish. On both occasions, the staff were attentive, friendly and helpful, and were happy to discuss the menu options at length despite busy sittings both times.” – SarahKe
Frank and Beanz
Nestled away in the bustling food court of the Majura Park Shopping Centre, Frank and Beanz is an underappreciated haven of American, Tex-Mex and traditional Mexican grub. It’s quick, convenient and consistently excellent, with a massive range of hotdogs, tacos, burritos, quesadillas, desserts and more. The Spicy Chicken Burrito is always a good choice, and that pineapple salsa is something else… Find out more

Zambrero
Zambrero recently opened its 100th store, which goes to show that nice guys don’t always finish last. These good Samaritans donate a meal to charity for every single burrito and bowl they sell, with over eight million bellies stuffed thus far. We always go for the ‘Dos Capas’, because it’s basically a crispy taco hidden inside a soft taco. A true marvel of culinary engineering! Find out more

Beach Burrito
Beach Burrito is part of a glorious restaurant family founded in Sydney’s Bondi Beach, and what a place it is! It’s rocking a kind of leafy, natural style crossed with the jumbled interior of an amusement arcade, and pulls it off effortlessly. The imported beers are great (Pistonhead, anyone? Sierra Nevada, perhaps?), and the pulled beef chimichanga is a piece of flash-fried magic with Mexican rice, cheese, salsa and a selection of delicious sides. Find out more
