It's ironic that when you drive into Wollongbar there's a sign that claims it's the friendliest place on the Northern Rivers. You wouldn't think so if you visit this fish and chip shop. The first time I went there the female owner was very gruff, just on the edge of rude. I gave her the benefit of the doubt. Maybe she had a hard day, I thought. Nope. This is her manner all the time. I took it as a personal challenge to try and get a smile out of her. I learnt her name, always entered with a huge smile and asked her questions about herself. What a waste of time. She never once acknowledged that I'd been there before and never once smiled. The 2 stars are for the food - it's ok - though tjhey don't do grilled fish. If you ask for it she'll tell you that flatly with a sigh of annoyance. Or she may say (as I overheard once) 'Do you see grilled fish on the menu?" Her sour demeanour puts me off my tucker, so I drive into Alstonville if I want take away now.
