Great Ocean Road Hotel

Not a bad place to stop over, basic but is OK. Not everything needs to be new and expensive.

Great Ocean Hotel, Apollo Bay. FILTHIEST HOTEL I have ever had the displeasure to stay in. My wife & I are bike riders and often stay in pubs. This pub had been done-up downstairs and looked good. Enquired about rooms, told $80 for couple, bit dearer than most country pubs, but not surprised as in a tourist town. Offered to lock my bike overnight in bottle-o which is always good service. Room was a bit of a shock! Old-style tiny room with double bed pushed against wall. Hand-basin and VERY second-hand furniture, but floor hadn't been vacuumed for maybe months, bottom sheet no top sheet - just the doona. Shower had 13 cakes of soap in it, looked like it hadn't been cleaned for months. Corridor covered in mud (yes it had been raining, but this mud was well trodden in). the best food in Apollo bay!!!

Had a porterhouse steak with mushroom sauce on the $16 steak night (Thursdays) and it was as good as any steak I've ever had (and I've had a few). Service was good and the meals came out promptly and all at the same time. The kids nuggets and chips was a hit with the young one also. Highly recommended.
